Supporting Our Community Amid the COVID19 Outbreak

Taff Rocks has been supported by our local community for best part, if not all, of a year now and, during these difficult times, we have been wondering how to help our members. Here is what we have done:

A little background first.
  • Taff Rocks' HQ is situated on the banks of the River Taff. Our nearest villages are Aberfan and Merthyr Vale (including Mount Pleasant)
  • We regularly, until the outbreak, ran monthly workshops in Nixonville
  • In order to do this, we received funding from:
Invest Local Ynysowen (ILY)
  • They funded us with a start-up grant and ...
  • Continue to fund us, in a two year programme, so we can run workshops in this area
What are we doing now that we can't run workshops?
  • For a while now, we have been working on preparing rock painting craft packs for our local community.
  • These 100 craft packs include:
    • Paints
    • Rocks
    • Brushes
    • Instruction and information leaflets
  • We requested a small amount of funding from ILY
  • We heard at the May Bank Holiday weekend that we have been successful
  • This will enable us to provide 100 craft bags.
Why only Aberfan and Merthyr Vale?
  • Any investment, whether is it your donations or grants received, need to be spent wisely. Which means we need to trial this project.
  • Invest Local is a Big Lottery-funded programme working in 13 communities across Wales. Each community gets £1 million over 10 years, and the community decides on how the money will be spent. Aberfan, Merthyr Vale and Mount Pleasant ('Ynysowen') is one of those communities.
Your free craft pack.
  • If you are a member of Taff Rocks and the Ynysowen community, we have 100 craft packs available to the vulnerable and in need.
  • There are two types of packs:
    • Individual packs
    • Family packs
  • We can only supply these to addresses in this area.
  • Please be mindful that stock of these bags are limited
  • They are prepared by a small number of volunteers (five or less, on rotation, due to social distancing measures)
  • The packs will be hand delivered by volunteers, also observing social distancing guidance.

Will we be expanding this project to reach other ares in Merthyr Tydfil?
Ideally, we want to say 'Yes!' but there are a few things to consider beforehand:
  • Will the trial prove to be a success?
  • Can we gain or divert other funding for outside of the Ynysowen area?
  • Can we get the volunteers in to help us out?
How do I keep up with the progress?
By signing up to our newsletter (button below). We will do our very best to include a progress report in every publication.

We thank you for your support!
