Pretty much all or almost all Rockers (rock painters) have heard of the Posca Pen. And if you haven't, here have you been?
This will be an exceptionally short review on the PC-5M (1.8-2.5mm) medium tipped pastel pens, that came to me in a pack of eight. These you can find on Amazon or in any good arts and crafts store.
The pack states that they will write on most surfaces, but I have only used them for rocks.
"Full opaque matt finish" and this, I can guarantee. The coverage is amazing! Of course, the longer you leave them standing after the initial 'charge' the more you need to re-prime the nib, but this is how it works with most paint pens.
The stone below was a relatively dark 'river rock' which, usually, I guess, would have needed a little primer or undercoat - But I didn't use one. The pink colour, of which there are two layers, served as an undercoat.
You'll notice the yellow here looks as though it's cracking and not covering very well, I have to say, this is an exception rather than the norm.
"Quick drying" I wouldn't go as far as to say they were any quicker drying than the other brand paint pens, but they are quick, so that's a plus. Leaving you to create more masterpieces and not have to wait forever for each but to dry.
Range of colours. The range of colours in this pastel pack is pretty good. I think it's all covered here.
Water resistant. I have had a different rock, left in my garden since last July, which has not been lacquered and it still looks the same.
Fade resistant. I have yet to find any paint pen, yet, that is not fade resistant,
Pros:
- Good range of pastel colours
- Removable tips, to switch around if they become 'blunt'.
- Excellent coverage, even good as a base layer
- Value for money
- Great size, even for little hands
- Water resistant
- Fade resistant
Cons:
- Tips can go blunt after a while
- Messy to change the nib around, so use a tweezers
In conclusion:
Let's be fair here, Posca is one of the market leaders in paint pens and they live up to their name.
